Chladni Plate

Using a sine generator and mechanical driver a simple metal plate is made to resonate. Sand sprinkled on the plate will come to rest on the nodes, making the resonant mode clearly visible. Several distinct resonant modes may be found by sweeping the frequency of the sine generator. Square, circular, and triangular plates are available.

A video camera may be used to project a close-up view of the Chladni plate on a wall or screen.

Setup

Connect the plate with a banana adaptor to the mechanical driver. Add some sand to the plate. As a starting point, 175 Hz seems to give you a standing wave pattern, as well as 350 Hz.
