Preparation of $CuSO_{4}+H_{2}O$ solutions for PNMR

The Copper Sulfate solution is (and should be) kept in the yellow chemical storage cabinet when not in use. Typically it can be found on the second shelf from the top.

Clean, fresh DDI water should be used for the dilutions. For the best results take a clean pyrex bottle, that has been rinsed thoroughly with Isopropol alcohol to ensure there is no residue inside, over to William Irvines lab where he has a DDI water dispenser we can use. DDI water can be purchased in larger quantities and stored in the chem prep room, but it is not certain how pure it is after having been opened. Tap water should not be used.

There are various beakers, flasks and other glassware in the chem prep room that can be used for preparing solutions. Glassware not hanging on the drying rack should be washed before use. Use mild detergent, we have Sparkle Klean in the cabinet, and water. There are bottle brushes of various sizes by the drying rack. Glassware should be allowed to dry thoroughly before using.

Disposable plastic pipettes are stored in the cabinet to the left of the sink. There are two sizes of pipette.

Sample vials for use in the PNMR detector are likely to contain solutions from a previous group. These solutions should not be used. Empty the vials in the appropriate chemical waste container, either Glycerine or Copper Sulfate, wash and allow to dry before use. When preparing your solutions, these vials should be labeled as to the contents so that others know how to dispose of the contents.

There is a Fisher Finnpipette that you can use for your dilutions. Disposable tips for the Finnpipette can be found on the counter to the left of the sink near the fume hood. Please rinse the tips you use and dispose of them in the trash at the end of the experiment. There is a specific technique that must be used with the Finnpipette which should be in the chem prep room, and are linked here Finnpipette Instructions.
