Instructor Notes For 2nd Day of Cratering Lab
High energy impactor
- Each group drops ball from 2nd and 3rd floor into sand on 1st floor.
- Students measure heights of their drops.
- TA responsible for safety.
- One group at a time doing drop, others remain on 1st floor.
- Droppers do not hold ball over rail until area within 3ft of sand container is clear and all students on 1st floor are paying attention.
- TA keeps an eye out for other traffic in hallway.
- Clean up sand around the area afterwards.
There is a potential for serious injury if someone is struck by the steel ball.
