Electric Fields I: Field Mapping

• Rulers
• Extra spare parts, especially the following:
  • Multimeters
  • Binder clips with small alligator clip wire (both types)
  • Function generator

• Large metal lunch tray
  • Smaller plastic frame box
  • Field mapping coordinate lines insert
  • Binder clip with small alligator clip wire (without resistor)
  • Binder clip with small alligator clip wire (with resistor)
  • Field mapping shapes:
    • Round cookie tin
    • Bent U-shape
    • Long bars (2)
    • Round cylinders (2)

• BK 3011B function generator (Modified or unmodified version is OK here)
  • BNC to double-banana adapter
  • 2 black and 1 red patch cable

• Multimeter
  • Red single-prong multimeter probe
  • Double-prone multimeter probe

On the function generators…

• …make sure that all knobs are turned fully counter-clockwise (minimum/off) except for amplitude (which should be fully clockwise (maximum).
• …set the frequency to a few thousand kHz and amplitude to maximum, which should correspond to about 7-10 V, peak-to-peak as measured on the AC voltage setting on the multimeter.
