Polarized light from a laser is passed through a glass rod inside a long coil. When a current is applied to the coil, the polarization of the light is rotated slightly. A rotatable polarization filter allows the polarization of the outgoing beam to be analyzed. The effect may be viewed by projecting the beam onto a wall or screen. Alternatively, a photodiode is available for measurement of the transmitted beam intensity.
